At Butabika National Referral Hospital, we recognize that accurate diagnosis is the cornerstone of effective treatment. That’s why our Laboratory stand at the forefront of our healthcare service providing vital support in diagnosis, monitoring, research, and clinical decision making.

Introduction

This unit plays an integral role in the hospital’s commitment to quality, innovation, and compassionate care, serving both inpatients and outpatients, and supporting clinicians across all specialties.

Butabika’s Laboratory Unit is internationally accredited and operates in full compliance with ISO 15189:2012 standards, ensuring that our laboratory services are not only accurate but also reliable and globally recognized:

Microbiology Section

Under this section, we have a Vitek 2 Compact Machine. It is used as culture and sensitivity

Under the same section we have other machines like; Biosafety Cabinet which is for safety and protection and a Gram stain Machine, to improve the accuracy, efficiency and consistency of bacterial identification which is crucial in various ways.

Hematology Section

Hematology is the study of blood and its disorders. Under this section, we have different machines which include; Mind ray, Nihon Kohden hematology analyzers and also blood bank fridge. Mind ray is an automated hematology analyzer for complete blood count and reticulocyte count. And Nihon Kohden hematology analyzers is a reliable and efficient hematology analyzer that provides accurate and comprehensive results for clinical and research applications.

Safety Measures

For safety measures in the laboratory, we have a Black medical bin indicating non-infectious waste, Yellow indicating the infectious waste and Red indicating highly infectious waste. Others we have fire blanket, Biohazard spill kit and fire extinguishers.

Training, Mentorship, and Outreach

Our laboratory is also a center for learning and capacity building. We run structured mentorship programs for laboratory students and provide technical support to lower-tier health facilities across the country. This ensures that quality diagnostic services are extended beyond our walls, strengthening Uganda’s wider healthcare system.

Continuous Improvement and Research

Driven by a culture of continuous quality improvement, the laboratory team regularly updates practices and adopts new technologies to improve patient care outcomes.
